International Metropolis Conferences

International Metropolis Conferences are the largest annual gathering of experts (from academia, governments, civil society, and business sectors) in the field of migration, integration, and diversity. Our plenary sessions offer access to the insights, analysis, and recommendations of some of the world’s key experts in this field. The delegates (approximately ranging from around 700 to over 1000) also enjoy a comprehensive workshop program (around 100 workshops), a PhD program, keynote speeches, symposia, special roundtables and partnership events, study tours, and social gatherings, over a week of cross-sectoral dialogue, learning, and knowledge exchange in an apolitical, respectful environment. The annual International Metropolis Conference is an intellectually challenging, culturally rewarding opportunity to network and explore the latest thinking and practices in migration policy, research, and programs.

Coming in 2024, November 14-17:

27th International Metropolis Conference, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2024

The 27th International Metropolis Conference will be hosted by the Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA) at the National University of Malaysia. The theme will be 'Migration Futures: Evolving Challenges in a Digital Age'.

This conference title indicates our keenness to encourage diverse ideas, cases, and instances, as well as key policy interventions, to analyze the migration from a range of macro and micro perspectives and involve people, cities, spatial development, technology and many more dynamics and influences. “Migration Futures” will explore the movement of people across and beyond borders in a context increasingly dominated by the Internet of Things (IoT). For instance, Artificial Intelligence is rapidly creating a world that is moving beyond just ‘paper citizens’ – with the application of new technologies and biometrics, along with the transfer of documentation now often faster than the capacity of nation-states to process and provide for new communities of migrants and refugees. However, with all its possibilities and problems, this new digital age adds to existing challenges concerning how to manage migration in just and equitable ways, the dynamics of destination cities, inclusivity and sustainability challenges, and the almost inevitable presence of anti-immigration politics.
